A blast of treacherous conditions and brutal cold has left at least six Texans dead during a blast of frigid temperatures and power outages Wednesday.

Now in its third day, the winter weather system has reached Texas. This week, Texas, Arkansas and other states have reported accidents on slippery roads.

"We really cannot emphasize this enough: DO NOT BE ON THE ROADS," the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth tweeted Wednesday. "They are going to virtually be impassable through today and tonight."

Classes were canceled for Thursday across Arkansas, Dallas, Austin, Texas, and Memphis, Tennessee.

Ice brought down power lines and tree limbs in the Texas state capital, causing power outages. As a result of icy roads and frozen equipment, the city's community-owned electric utility said it was difficult to estimate restoration times.

Texas was colder than Alaska early. It was 3 degrees warmer in Dallas than Anchorage on Wednesday morning, according to AccuWeather.
