Survey: Americans dissatisfied with gun laws

Despite a recent string of mass shootings across the country, a majority of Americans surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with current gun laws. 63 percent of respondents were dissatisfied with firearms laws and policies in the country, while 34 percent were satisfied.

There has been a seven-point increase in the number of Americans who are dissatisfied with current gun laws since last year, when 56 percent expressed dissatisfaction. According to Gallup, satisfaction with gun policies has also dropped since last year's poll, tying the lowest level on record.

Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents are most satisfied with handgun laws and policies, while 44 percent are dissatisfied. The report found that 84 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning Independents disapprove of the nation's laws and policies, while 14 percent are satisfied.

In the Independent Survey, 60% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the nation's firearm policies and laws, while 36% were satisfied. A 43-year-old gunman opened fire at two locations on Michigan State University's East Lansing campus earlier this week, resulting in a mass shooting. Three students were killed, and five others were critically injured in the incident.

Last month, 11 people were killed during Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, Calif., after a mass shooting at MSU.

In June of last year, President Biden signed the bipartisan Safer Communities Act in response to two other mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.
