After Monday's earthquakes and aftershocks that devastated Turkey and Syria, rescuers searched desperately for survivors, the homeless problem grew acute, and the death toll rose to more than 16,000 Thursday.

More than 60,000 people have also been injured in Turkey, according to the disaster management agency. More than 5,000 people have been injured on the Syrian side of the border.

There are expected to be more than 16,000 deaths worldwide from this earthquake. A death rate of below 25% is expected after 72 hours in an incident of this magnitude, and frigid temperatures make survival even less likely.
