Earlier this year, the Nets traded Kyrie Irving along with Durant, 34, to the Knicks. As a result of moving Durant, Brooklyn will receive Phoenix's first-round picks in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029.

Prior to the start of the season, Durant asked the Nets for a trade, but general manager Sean Marks was unable to find a deal that would give Brooklyn the draught picks they desired,

especially after Utah acquired four future first-round picks and 2022 first-round pick Walker Kessler from Minnesota in the Rudy Gobert trade in July.

After Irving made a late-week trade request and the Nets granted it, they reevaluated their strategy and chose to start over by trading Durant. Durant missed the Miami game on January 8 due to an isolated MCL sprain of the right knee. He had hoped to be back in time for the All-Star Game, but that is not going to happen. Prior to moving him, the Nets had not provided a timeline for his return.
