Many people strive to better themselves in the new year, whether at work, in relationships, or personally. It seems Jessica Pegula has gotten the message.

With her first win over world No. 1 Iga Wiatek in a United Cup semifinal in Sydney earlier this month, the 28-year-old is off to a good start in 2023.

Having reached the tournament's quarterfinals the past two years, the American could reach even greater success with the Australian Open underway. 6-0 6-2, Pegula beat Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in the third round on Friday.

"Jess certainly has a chance to win her first grand slam," according to Eurosport expert Barbara Schett. She surprised me when she played against Iga Wiatek. In a nutshell, she hit Iga. She can win the Australian Open if she repeats this level."

Pegula is ranked third in the world. Terry Pegula and Kim Pegula co-own the NFL's Buffalo Bills and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, her father's sports empire.

According to Forbes, her father made his fortune in oil and gas through East Resources. Her parents sold company assets in 2010 and bought the Sabres for $189 million in 2014.

He juggles tennis commitments to watch Bills games despite being a tennis star.
