A representative of David Crosby said he died after founding the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash (later Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) during the 1960s. 81 was his age. The cause of death is unknown.

He had been tweeting as recently as Wednesday on his very active Twitter account. "I heard the place is overrated... cloudy," Crosby tweeted the day before he died.

Crosby's former CSNY partner Graham Nash, who was estranged from Crosby as the group disbanded, paid tribute on social media. The news of Crosby's passing deeply saddens me," Nash wrote.

It's true that our relationship has been volatile at times, but what's most important to us was the joy of creating music together, discovering sounds with each other, and the deep friendship we've shared.

In life and in music, David was fearless. In terms of sheer talent and personality, he leaves a huge void. Through his beautiful music, he expressed his mind, his heart, and his passion. What matters most is this. He has touched so many lives in this world, including his wife, Jan, and his son, Django."

Crosby made headlines eight months ago when he declared he was done performing live, saying he was too old. He said he could not do it. However, he was recording as fast as he could: "I have been making records at a startling rate.

Due to my age, I'm gonna die pretty soon. It works that way. So, as long as it’s good, I’m cranking out as much music as possible. Crosby subsequently backtracked about retiring from performing live in mid-December, saying, “Dare I say it? I have another one already in the can waiting.” It's time for me to start another band and play live again.”
