Madden died on December 28, 2021, and while he was important to the NFL for a variety of reasons, one of his most notable contributions was to the league’s Thanksgiving celebration.When the great coach and broadcaster died, many people wondered how the NFL would memorialise him. Today, the NFL has decided to go all out, and Madden will be featured in a variety of ways.
“No one cared more about our game or contributed more than John Madden,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. “It is vital to honour his memory and impact on the NFL, and Thanksgiving Day brings all of the components important to John to life – family, football, food, and fun.”

Madden will be recognised as one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, having accomplished more in 10 years with the Raiders than many people do in a career. And, although retiring at the age of 42, his services to the league remained after that.
Only a few years after retiring from coaching, Madden entered the commentary booth and established himself as the voice of football. He called 11 separate Super Bowls and broadcast for 28 years in a row. But it was during the NFL’s Thanksgiving celebrations that Madden provided us memories that would last a lifetime.
