Gerald “Jerry” Lawson was the principal inventor of video game cartridges, and Google has developed a unique doodle in his honor. To celebrate his 82nd birthday today, the computer giant is providing a selection of minigames on its homepage (December 1). Jerry Lawson is playing a sketch that resembles a video game in today’s Google Doodle, which visitors may access directly from the homepage.

In order to best honor Gerald “Jerry” Lawson’s memory, Google allegedly worked with three artists and game designers—Davionne Gooden, Lauren Brown, and Momo Pixel—to build a number of games that would be shown on the search engine’s homepage.

In the Google homepage game, a few missing blocks are simply added to a level to allow an 8-bit Lawson to reach the goal flag. After then, a variety of extra games that are correctly depicted as cartridges become playable and customizable. Players can also start with a level that is wholly empty in order to design the minigame, which can be a platformer, a breakout-style game, or something else different.
After making the desired changes, users can share a link to their completed level by clicking the share icon in the top-right corner. Users can play a different game each time they click on it.

Gerald “Jerry” Lawson oversaw the engineering and development of the Fairchild Channel F, which was first released in 1976. The option to change software depending on the cartridge being used was first introduced with this particular video game console. Another innovation of the Fairchild Channel F, which also had the first home console with a “pause” button, was the 8-way joystick invented by Jerry Lawson.
In 1980, Lawson started his own business, VideoSoft. It was one of the earliest Black-owned firms that created video games
For his contributions to gaming, Lawson was recognised in 2011 by the International Game Developers Association as an industry trailblazer. The University of Southern California established the Gerald A. Lawson Fund to assist underrepresented students who want to pursue undergraduate or graduate degrees in computer science or game design. Lawson’s contributions are recognised by the Rochester, New York-based World Video Game Hall of Fame.
