Michelle Yeoh would probably have told you that you had no idea what you were talking about if you had said to her 45 years ago that she would become an actress and be nominated for an Oscar.
She had already made up her mind and chosen her direction. She intended to become a ballerina. But as life often does, it caught her off guard when she had a back injury as a teenager that altered the trajectory of her life.
But she did change, displaying the same unbreakable spirit that has guided her throughout her life. In her native Hong Kong, she established quite a career for herself, but subsequently she turned her attention to the US and Hollywood.
And she was successful. The 60-year-old Malaysian actor has fought Jet Li in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, jumped from a building alongside Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies, and hopped into a moving car being driven by Jackie Chan in Supercop.
She played pivotal roles in Crazy Rich Asians, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. After finishing Marvel, Star Trek, Kung Fu Panda, and Minions, she will move on to Avatar, Transformers, and The Witcher. But she had never occupied the top spot on a Hollywood call sheet prior to the March debut of Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Of course, she chose to do this. She consciously chose to only watch films that challenged preconceptions. She wanted to be the woman in the movie who also happened to be Asian, not the Asian woman in the film.
Years passed between her films as a result of these decisions, but she persevered and is now recognised as the 2022 Icon of the Year by Time Magazine.
Give it to me, she responds, “OK.” Yeoh has always been a lady who is clear about what she wants, including to establish her worth, play and fall in love, and inspire future generations through the medium of film.
Now she wants that Oscar—that recognition for herself and for individuals who look “like us” everywhere in the world so that we can know what it’s like to be told we belong.
It’s not about needing it; it’s that sensation of other people’s love, which is something you can just feel. I have my arms extended.
