However, after being selected captain in the summer, McNamara found himself competing for the starting spot with junior J.J. McCarthy this season. McNamara comes off the bench in Week 2 after starting the opening game of the season.
After the Week 1 win over Colorado State, McNamara struggled and expressed discontent with how the quarterback position was being handled. McCarthy started Week 2 with McNamara on the bench, and following the win over Hawaii, Jim Harbaugh designated McCarthy the starting quarterback for the rest of the season.
