The creative director of Balenciaga, Demna, has apologized publicly for one of the company’s most recent ad campaigns that showed young children holding fetish-dressed teddy bears.

Demna, who only goes by his first name, posted a message on Instagram on Friday saying, “I want to personally apologize for the erroneous aesthetic choice of concept for the giving campaign with the kids and I assume my responsibility. “Having children advocate for things that had nothing to do with them was inappropriate.”

In addition, Demna said, “As much as I occasionally want to provoke a thought through my work, I would NEVER have a purpose to do that with such a terrible subject as child abuse that I deplore.” He continued by saying that going forward, he is dedicated to working with “child protection organizations.”

The high-end fashion house had previously issued an apology and completely retracted the campaign last week.

Following Demna’s post, Cédric Charbit, president and CEO of Balenciaga, posted a statement on Instagram in which he expressed his own regret for “our mistakes” and shared a list of initiatives that the fashion house is currently putting into practice.
